Five short chapters on travelling Egypt well — written by our advisors in Cairo for the travellers we look after.
October to April is the classical season — warm days, cool evenings, and the light photographers travel for. May and September are quieter and warmer, with the sites almost to yourself in the early hours. High summer belongs to the Red Sea and to those who do not mind heat. We plan around the light and the crowds, not around the calendar.
In Cairo, a room facing the Pyramids or a garden suite on Zamalek, depending on whether you want spectacle or calm. In Luxor, the west bank at dusk. In Aswan, a terrace above the cataract. On the Nile, a small vessel — a dahabiya of a handful of cabins rather than a floating hotel. The address matters less than the view from it at six in the morning.
The Pyramids before the gates open. A tomb opened for you alone on the west bank. An Egyptologist who has spent thirty years in the field rather than a guide with a clipboard. These are arranged quietly, one journey at a time, and they are the difference between seeing Egypt and being received by it.
Ten to twelve nights is the honest answer: Cairo for three, the Nile for four or five, and time at the end for the Red Sea or the Western Desert. Anything shorter becomes a checklist. Anything longer is a pleasure, not a necessity.
The same driver for the whole journey. Water and cold towels waiting in the car. A number in your phone that answers at two in the morning. Reservations that are already made when you arrive. Very little of what makes a journey feel effortless is visible — that is rather the point.
